How it works
UNBG runs in your browser. Your image is not uploaded to UNBG. Read the privacy details
Local processing without the setup
Running background removal on your own machine used to mean installing software: a desktop app, or a command-line tool with Python, model downloads and sometimes GPU drivers. UNBG gets the same result, your hardware doing the work, from an ordinary browser tab.
| Topic | Desktop or command-line tool | UNBG |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Required | None: open a web page |
| Where the model runs | Your computer | Your computer or phone, inside the browser |
| Image uploaded? | No | No |
| Updates | Manual | Automatic when you reload the page |
| Scripting and automation | Usually yes | No: UNBG is interactive only |
If you need unattended, scripted processing of thousands of files, a command-line tool is still the better choice. For everything else, a browser tab is simpler.
What runs where
| Part | Where it runs |
|---|---|
| The web page and app code | Downloaded from unbg.me, runs in your browser |
| The AI model (BiRefNet lite 1024 (fp16, WebGPU)) | Downloaded from unbg.me (the same site), then cached when browser storage is available |
| Background removal | Your GPU via WebGPU where available; otherwise your CPU via WebAssembly |
| Creating the PNG or ZIP | Your browser |

What you need
- A current browser. WebGPU can accelerate processing; browsers without it fall back to WebAssembly, which works more widely but can be slower. UNBG checks what your browser supports and tells you if it can't run. Tested browsers
- Memory. Large photos need a lot of it. On phones and older computers, UNBG may offer a reduced-size result for very large images rather than crash.
- First-use download. about 142 MB (about 113 MB in compatibility mode) to prepare the model and engine.
First run and later runs
The first time you remove a background, UNBG downloads the model files, checks each one against its published SHA-256 fingerprint, and tries to store them in your browser's cache. Later visits can reuse those files. An update, cleared or evicted storage, private mode, or unavailable caching can require another download.
When we publish a new model version, it gets a new file address. UNBG attempts to remove obsolete cached versions; browser storage failures can prevent that cleanup. You can clear the site's stored data yourself.
Offline use
UNBG needs a connection to load the page and, the first time, to download the model. Everything after that happens on your device.
Clear the model from your device
The cached model takes up about 142 MB (about 113 MB in compatibility mode) of storage. To remove it and anything else UNBG stored (settings only; images are never stored):
- Chrome / Edge: click the icon to the left of the address bar, then Site settings, then Delete data.
- Firefox: click the padlock, then Clear cookies and site data….
- Safari (Mac): Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data…, search for
unbg.meand select Remove. - Safari (iPhone/iPad): Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data, find
unbg.meand swipe to delete.
The model downloads again next time you use UNBG. Some browsers, Safari in particular, may also remove stored site data on their own after a period without use, so you may occasionally see the download again.
Questions
Does "local" mean I can use it without the internet?
The processing is local, but you need a connection to open the page and for the first model download.
Will it use my graphics card?
Yes, if your browser supports WebGPU. Otherwise UNBG uses your processor through WebAssembly.
Can I run UNBG from the command line or an API?
No. UNBG is an interactive web app.
Where exactly is the model stored?
In your browser's Cache Storage for this site, when storage is available. You can clear it at any time (see above); private mode or browser eviction may require another download.
