How it works

UNBG runs in your browser. Your image is not uploaded to UNBG. Read the privacy details

Remove the background from a PNG

A PNG can already have a clear background, or it can be a flat photo saved as PNG. UNBG reads the file on your device, separates the subject, and gives you a new PNG. It does not send the image, the result or the filename to us.

JPG and WebP work as inputs too. Still images only, up to 50 MB and 60 megapixels. Animated files and SVG are refused.

What you download

  • Transparent is the default: a PNG whose background is clear.
  • White or a custom colour if the next tool you use does not support transparency.
  • Several images at once, up to 50 (fewer on phones, on devices with less memory and in browsers that don't report memory, such as Firefox and Safari (20 or 10); the tool shows your limit), as separate PNGs or one ZIP. Bulk background removal

Check the edges before you rely on the file. Hair, fur, glass and a busy background are the usual weak spots. The how it works page covers the steps and those limits.

Where it runs

There is no app to install. Computers use BiRefNet when the browser can run WebGPU, and a smaller BiRefNet build otherwise. Phones and tablets use U²-Netp. Desktop Chrome and Firefox on Windows are the tested browsers. Other browsers, including phones and Safari, are still being tested.

Commercial use of results hasn't been confirmed yet during the beta. The credits page explains why, including the model licences.

Questions

Can I remove the background from a PNG?

Yes. Choose a PNG, or a JPG or WebP, and download a PNG with the background removed. The download is a PNG even when the original was a JPG, because JPG cannot store transparency.

What does the checkerboard mean?

The checkerboard in the preview stands for transparency. It is not part of the file. A program that supports transparency, such as a photo editor or a browser, shows whatever sits behind the cut-out.

Why is the saved file a PNG when I started with a JPG?

A transparent result needs a format that can store a clear background. UNBG saves that as PNG. If you would rather have a solid colour, pick white or a custom colour before you download.

Will the PNG be the same size as the original?

Usually it matches the original pixel size. On devices with limited memory, a very large image can be saved smaller, and the page tells you when that happens.

Is the transparent PNG maker free?

Yes, during the beta. No account and no watermark. Start on the homepage, or use the tool on this page.
