Why remove.bg's free download is only 625 × 400 pixels
remove.bg's free download is a preview of up to 0.25 megapixels, about 625 × 400 pixels, according to remove.bg's help centre. A 12-megapixel phone photo has almost 49 times as many pixels. The full-resolution version costs one credit per image, and remove.bg's website closes on 1 December 2026.
Quick answer: what 0.25 megapixels means
A megapixel is a million pixels, so 0.25 megapixels is 250,000 pixels. remove.bg's help centre puts it this way: "Preview is an image of up to 0.25 megapixels (e.g., 625 x 400)." For anything larger it says: "Removing the background from 1 image requires 1 credit if you want to download it in high resolution." High resolution goes "up to 50 megapixels" (maximum resolution).
The maths: your photo versus the preview
The preview keeps your photo's shape and shrinks it until it has about 250,000 pixels. Worked out for common photos:
| Photo | Pixels | 0.25 MP preview | Times larger than the preview |
|---|---|---|---|
| remove.bg's example | 625 × 400 = 250,000 | 625 × 400 | 1× |
| 12 MP phone photo (4:3) | 4032 × 3024 = 12,192,768 | about 577 × 433 | almost 49× |
| 24 MP camera photo (3:2) | 6000 × 4000 = 24,000,000 | about 612 × 408 | 96× |
| Full HD screenshot (16:9) | 1920 × 1080 = 2,073,600 | about 667 × 375 | about 8× |
These are our own calculations from the 0.25-megapixel limit, rounded to whole pixels.
Why the preview looked sharp on screen but failed later
On a phone screen or in a small web layout, 625 pixels is enough, so the preview looks fine. The problem shows up when you need more pixels than you have:
- Print. A common print standard is 300 pixels per inch. At that density, 625 pixels prints about 2.1 inches (5.3 cm) wide. The original 4032-pixel phone photo prints about 13.4 inches (34 cm) wide.
- Zoom and crop. Shop listings, slides and posters often let people zoom in, or you crop the subject. A preview has no spare pixels for either, so edges turn soft and blocky.
- Edges. Hair and fine detail are where a cut-out is judged. At 0.25 megapixels, a strand of hair may be a single pixel wide or disappear.
Why server-based tools charge for full resolution
remove.bg processes images on its servers after you upload them, and servers with AI hardware cost money for every image. A small free preview and paid full-size downloads is a common way to cover that. remove.bg says so plainly: "For higher resolutions of up to 50 megapixels and commercial use, we offer premium plans and image packages." (Is remove.bg free?)
unbg.me works differently: the AI model downloads to your browser and runs on your own device, so there is no per-image server cost to recover. That is why the download itself is free during the beta.
What we measured on unbg.me
On 19 October 2026 we ran unbg.me's production build on a Windows 11 computer in Chrome's engine (Chromium 153) and Firefox 155, with three test photos, and measured the downloaded PNGs. Both browsers used unbg.me's WebAssembly engine.
| Photo uploaded | Chromium 153 | Firefox 155 |
|---|---|---|
| 1200 × 800 (1 MP) | 1200 × 800, full size | 1200 × 800, full size |
| 4032 × 3024 (12.2 MP phone photo) | 4032 × 3024, full size | 4000 × 3000 (12 MP), with a notice |
| 6000 × 4000 (24 MP) | 6000 × 4000, full size | 4242 × 2828 (12 MP), with a notice |
The difference is memory reporting. Chrome tells the page how much memory the device has, and unbg.me then allows up to 60 MP. Firefox and Safari don't report it, so unbg.me caps the result at about 12 MP to stay stable and says "Saved at a lower resolution" when it does. None of the files had a watermark. We haven't yet measured phones, Safari or Chrome's WebGPU engine.
How to check any "free" background remover
Before you rely on a tool, spend two minutes on one photo:
- Download one result and check its pixel size. On Windows, right-click the file, then Properties and Details. On a Mac, open it in Preview and choose Tools, then Show Inspector. Compare it with your original.
- Note whether you had to sign up or hand over an email address before the download.
- Zoom in to 100% and look at the corners and edges for a watermark, a logo or soft blocky edges.
A tool that passes all three gives you a real free download, not a preview. See what each vendor says about its free tier.
What changes on 1 December 2026
remove.bg's FAQ says its standalone website "will no longer be available" from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET, and unused pay-as-you-go credits expire on that date. If you want full-size versions of past results, download them while your account still works. The full shutdown checklist

Questions
Why is my remove.bg download so small?
Because the free download is a preview. remove.bg's help centre says the preview is "an image of up to 0.25 megapixels (e.g., 625 x 400)". The full-resolution version costs one credit per image.
What is the remove.bg free preview size?
Up to 0.25 megapixels, which is 250,000 pixels. remove.bg gives 625 × 400 as the example. The exact width and height follow your photo's shape: a 3:2 photo comes out at about 612 × 408, and a 4:3 photo at about 577 × 433.
How much bigger is a phone photo than the preview?
A typical 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024 pixels, or 12,192,768 pixels. That is almost 49 times the 250,000 pixels of a 0.25-megapixel preview.
Can I still buy full-resolution remove.bg downloads?
Only until its website closes on 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET. After that, remove.bg's FAQ says unused pay-as-you-go credits expire. What to do before the closure
Does unbg.me give a full-size download for free?
In Chrome on a computer that reports its memory, yes: our 12 MP and 24 MP test photos came back at exactly the original size. Firefox and Safari don't report memory, so unbg.me saves at most about 12 MP there; a 4032 × 3024 photo came back at 4000 × 3000. The tool tells you when it saves a smaller size.
